Protecting Your Money Online: 5 Simple Ways to Help Keep Your Accounts Safe
by Hans Mensch, Vice President, Technology
Keeping your money and personal information safe is important every day, especially as more of our lives move online. Whether you’re checking your balance on your phone, paying bills online, or shopping from your computer, a few simple habits can go a long way toward helping protect your money and personal information.
At Sonora Bank, protecting our customers’ information is a priority. While we use multiple layers of security to help safeguard your accounts, you also play an important role in keeping your information safe. Here are five ways to make security part of your everyday routine.
1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Reusing the same password across multiple accounts can put more than one account at risk if that password is compromised. Create a strong, unique password for online banking, email, and other important accounts.
A password manager can help you generate and securely store passwords, so you don't have to remember every one. If you haven't updated an old or reused password in a while, now is a good time to start.
2. Add an Extra Layer of Protection
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another step to the login process, such as entering a code or approving a sign-in on a trusted device. This extra layer can help protect your account even if someone obtains your password.
Enable MFA wherever it's available, especially for email, online banking, and other accounts containing sensitive information. Never share a verification code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly, even if they claim to be helping you protect your account.
3. Pause Before Clicking or Responding
Scammers often make their messages look legitimate. You might receive a text about a suspicious transaction, an email claiming your account has been locked, or a phone call warning that your money is at risk. The goal is often to create a sense of urgency so you'll click a link, share personal information, or send money before you have time to think.
Before responding, stop and verify the request independently. Don't click links or call phone numbers included in unexpected messages. Instead, use the official website or a phone number you already know is legitimate.
Remember, caller ID, email addresses, and text messages can be spoofed. Even a message that appears to come from a familiar number or organization deserves a closer look when something feels unusual.
4. Keep Your Devices and Apps Updated
Updates to your phone, computer, browser, and mobile apps often include important security improvements. Delaying updates can leave your devices more vulnerable to known security issues.
Turn on automatic updates when possible, download apps from trusted sources, and use a screen lock on your devices. If you use public Wi-Fi, avoid accessing sensitive accounts unless you can do so through a secure connection you trust.
5. Monitor Your Accounts and Set Up Alerts
Make a habit of reviewing your account activity regularly. Look for unfamiliar purchases, transfers, withdrawals, or other transactions you don't recognize.
Account alerts can also help you spot activity sooner. Depending on the options available through your bank and other financial providers, you may be able to receive notifications about transactions, transfers, or changes to your account.
If you notice something suspicious, don't wait to see what happens next. Contact your bank promptly so the situation can be reviewed.
What Should You Do if Something Doesn't Look Right?
If you receive a message claiming to be from Sonora Bank and you're unsure whether it's legitimate, contact us directly using a trusted phone number or visit our official website. Don't use the contact information or links provided in a suspicious message.
Never share your password, PIN, or one-time verification code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Be especially cautious of anyone who pressures you to move money to another account, pay a fee to protect your funds, or keep a transaction secret.
If you believe your account information has been compromised or notice a transaction you didn't authorize, contact Sonora Bank as soon as possible. Acting quickly can help us determine the appropriate next steps.
A Little Caution Goes a Long Way
Online and mobile banking make managing your money more convenient, and good security habits can help you enjoy that convenience with greater confidence. Strong passwords, extra login protection, careful clicking, updated devices, and regular account reviews are simple steps that can make a meaningful difference.
At Sonora Bank, we're proud to serve our communities and help our customers feel confident about their financial lives. If you ever have questions about a suspicious message or activity on your account, reach out. We're here to help.
Bank smart. Stay alert. Protect what matters.
